Nice metaphor Alex (dope name by the way). I definitely feel like one of the greatest tragedies of our current age is that our attention is always dedicated towards worrying about what others think of us. We might trick ourselves into thinking that having a nice balcony, an expensive car or plastic surgery is for our own happiness. But really we’re just trying to fulfill external expectations of what society considers to be success, status and beauty. If not consciously, on some sub-conscious level I think that we’re all aware of this. Regardless, without directing enough attention to reflecting on why we have a balcony that we sledom use, it’s hard to not get swept away with the rest of the crowd.
