I’m not sure I follow your line of thought. How would keeping exisiting welfare policies to further bolster those in need impact the universality of a basic income scheme? The issue is that the current system is not setup to assist the millions of people who are going to struggle to find employment in the coming decades. They may not be considered vulnerable now but they will be very quickly. Targeting inequality now is important yes, but there’s no reason why this can’t be pursued at the same time that we endeavour to future proof the wider public from the impact of wide spread unemployment.
